The Little Engine That Could

The Little Engine That Could - Watty Piper, Doris Hauman, George Hauman

Lexile Level: 680L

This story is about a train carrying supplies for children but it breaks down and can't get the goods to the children. The train asks several trains that pass by for help, but they all turn the train down. Eventually a little engine helps but she thinks she is not strong enough to pull the train, because she has never done anything like this before. She chants "I think I can, I think I can," and she succeeds helping the train.

This would be a good book to read to all students who are having a hard time or struggling with school or life in general. Children need to hear that they are able to succeed, no matter what the situation is.

Olivia

Olivia - Ian Falconer

Lexile Level: AD 270L

This book is about a young girl pig named Olivia. She is good at a lot of things and never gets tired of doing those things. She enjoys things like singing songs, dressing up, building sand castles, dancing, painting on walls and more. She has a little brother, who would sometimes just not leave her alone. Throughout the story, Olivia does many different activities that she loves to do. She does all these fun activities to wear out her family members because she never gets sleepy. But finally at the end of the story after a long day Olivia lays down in bed to read a story with her mother, and finally goes to sleep.

This is a book that most kindergarten or first graders can relate to because of the activities that Olivia does throughout the book. This book would be an enjoyable read for younger students.

Harold and the Purple Crayon

Harold and the Purple Crayon - Crockett Johnson

Lexile Level: 490L

This book is about a curious little boy named Harold, who has a very creative imagination using a purple crayon. Whatever he wants to do, he draws it with his purple crayon and it comes to life with his imagination. Throughout the book, he draws things and places that his imagination creates. I would use this book in Kindergarten to show that everyone has creativity within them and that it is okay to let it shine.

Miss Nelson is Missing

Miss Nelson Is Missing! - Harry Allard, James Marshall

Lexile Level: 340L

So this is book would be good to read to grades 2nd-4th. It starts off with room 207's teacher being out, so they have to have a substitute, Miss Viola Swamp who is not like their teacher at all. She is strict, moody, and she wears all black. When she comes in the room, the kids can tell that she means business, she gives them tons of homework and no story hour. As days passed, the students started to miss Miss Nelson. The students tried to find her, even going to the police, but it was no use, Miss Nelson was no where to  be found. But then one day, instead of hearing Miss Swamp's voice, they heard the sweet teacher they remember coming into the room, Miss Nelson. When she came in she was surprised that not only that they missed her, but they were well behaved.

I would use this book to show that everyone should be respected the same way and reinforced manner and the respect to teachers and elders.
